speak to me

The wheels are turning on the audiobook version of Foop! If all goes as planned, it could be the greatest thing to hit your ipod since Arcade Fire.
After much debate, the book will be read by Chris, taking on the role of Joe, the narrator in Foop! This decision was made after Chris realized that the only other people who could pull it off, Crispin Glover and Tiny Tim, were either out of reach or quite dead.
With Chris in place to narrate and a few genius sound desigers being considered, there's still the matter of the supporting cast. Chris briefly considered doing all of the voices himself, but then he realized that while he can do a mean impression of Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, he's a far cry from Mel Blanc.
So we're holding open auditions for all those interested in using their voices for something besides yapping about some nonsense for once. If you're one of the amazing folks who has already read Foop!, and you believe you can do a good voice for Mr. Burk, Martini, Ba Hubba, May, Mrs. Burk, or any other minor character in the book, here's your chance to be part of what promises to be a sonic masterpiece for the ages. There will be music, sound effects, Chris' heavy breathing, and, possibly, you.
To audition, all you have to do is record yourself reading a chunk of dialogue from the book in the voice of a supporting character of your choice. Just pick a favorite scene, get a scene partner, fire up that cheap computer microphone you have sitting in your closet, and go for it. The more unique your voice is, the better. Once you're done, email the file in mp3 format to me here.
Since a lot people aren't computer savvy enough to record an mp3 of their voice (Chris' family, I'm looking in your direction) Chris set up an audioblog here where you can post your audition over the phone. How cool is that?
If you really, really, really want to audition for Joe, be my guest. In that case you can just read a chunk of text and not have to worry about a scene partner. But keep in mind that you'll be up against Chris, who's a total vocal stud.
If you enter and don't get picked I will still post a clip of your audition on this site for kicks. You have until the end of June to submit. Godspeed.
And if you haven't read the book yet...well, what in the name of H.R. Pufnstuf are you waiting for? GET IT!

Any directorial tips before I start screaming into my ipod? I'm shooting for Mr. Burk.
Posted by: ryan at May 12, 2005 11:06 AMJust give me your best impression of what you think Mr. Burk sounds like. Everybody has something different in their heads while they read the book. I'm interested in hearing what was in your head.
Give it lots of energy and be as creative as possible. And don't be afraid to come across as cartoonish. The illustrations in the book are cartoony for a reason.
Posted by: pepino at May 12, 2005 11:13 AMHey Pepino, any recording tips? I haven't recorded my voice since I was a kid, and that was back when my brother and I would tell fart jokes into our dad's old tape recorder and play them back for our friends.
Is that bendy computer microphone the way to go?
Posted by: Billy Pilgrim at May 12, 2005 12:11 PMYes, the bendy computer microphone will work just fine, as will a headset. Your computer has a microphone jack in the back, so just plug something into it and start yapping. This doesn't have to be broadcast quality since it's only an audition.
You could also record directly into an ipod via the voice recorder attachment, or you could use one of those handheld digital voice recorders that people sometimes use for those "note to self..." type moments.
Posted by: pepino at May 12, 2005 01:03 PMSince a lot of people have been emailing in to complain about the futuristic technological requirements needed to record voices (seriously people, we're not aksing you to build a friggin time machine here), Chris has set up an audioblog where you can call in and record your audition over the phone.
The audioblog and instructions can be found here:
